L'Avventura is a classic Italian arthouse movie which deals with existentialism within a group of young upper class people who find one of their friends unexplainably disappears. And that's it in a sentance. The mystery of the disappearance is never explained and it has many meanings that you can read about on various movie sites. It's a film that nowadays you just watch to say you've watched it. Some of the themes are interesting and it's all very beautiful and you see the justification in it being remembered. However, it was never going to really engage me.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover
is a faux Shakespearian tale that has a long, slightly annoying title, which also gives a clue into the ending of the film. It is a movie that sometimes crosses the line into pretentious, but some of the visual moments really stand out in the mind for days afterwards. I've watched a fair amount of gore in my life, unaffected, but the final scene in this film is pretty disturbing. The movie is enjoyable and I loved the over the top nature of it, but it really lacked something fulfilling. The material did not quite live up to the other aspects of the film. It is like someone wanted to adapt a Titus Andronicus but they wanted to skip most of it and just concentrate the on revenge by cooking bit.

So it's the perfect length of a pop song, eh?

This made me wonder what sits at that length on my playlist!

The best examples I could find were Emily Kane by Art Brut, Boys Don't Cry by The Cure, Spooky by Dusty Springfield, I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow, I Second That Emotion by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Thinking About You by Radiohead, Celebrity Skin by Hole, What She Said by The Smiths, Elvis by These New Puritans, You Could Have Done So Much Better by Franz Ferdinand and the less traditional Men Are Bastards by Elle Milano.

There's more, but these are the ones that stuck out the most. One thing I saw was that only one Motown song was here, which was the factory for perfect pop songs in the 60s and beyond. It's not even the best by the band let alone the record label.

But apart from that the other songs are full of elements of the perfect pop song although some I would say are probably quite contrived in that they were probably made to be 2:42. I'd imagine the Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, Art Brut and These New Puritans songs were made for it. Especially Emily Kane, which part of me says is the best pop song on the list, a slightly smaller part of me guns for Celebrity Skin and there's equal measures that are gunning for The Smiths and The Cure.

Most people would say Boys Don't Cry is the only choice on this list, but really it's probably Spooky that's the real winner. Equal parts sex and innocence, there's something magical, summery and also ultimately sad and downright spooky about the song. The Elle Milano song is ultimately the one that made me giggle to be at the infamous 2:42 length, repeatedly singing "It's not, it's not just to get your clothes off". However, Radiohead's probably has the best pop song subject matter of masterbation.

Boys Don't Cry or I Want Candy get the simple and to the point approach across the best. You Could Have It So Much Better tries to catch the spirit of 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' by The Rolling Stones, but characteristically Franz Ferdinand make it a bit more complex, whether that's a good thing I'm not sure. It's view is to make you "get up, get up" and sometimes it would, but it often fails and I never have the compulsion to listen to it, I like it, but I forget that.

What She Said by The Smiths is the most effecting for me personally, they single handedly (ok, maybe not) drove me to buying my first pack of cigarettes. Fortunately I haven't kept up that habit but still that's pretty powerful, if pathetic. The romanticism and my want to be like a girl in a Smiths song definitely makes me consider it heavily. The line was, "What she said, I smoke cause I'm hoping for an early death and I need to cling to something" which still sounds ridiculously cool even nearly four years after my 17-year-old self with a penchant for being tragically romantic first considered it in a Science classroom.

I have to say, based on my own playlist, Boys Don't Cry might be the perfect pop song. But with acts like Cazals releasing To Cut A Long Story Short and the superb Elvis by These New Puritans maybe the perfect pop song is not with us quite yet.

6th Nov, 2007

Oh crap. I'm like ill. And I keep thinking I'm okay, then doing stuff and feeling worse than before. Great. On Saturday it felt like my brain was going to burst out of my skull and every smell made me feel physically sick. Especially the smell of sambuca. Obviously I didn't stay until the end. Most of the people I was with left quite early anyway. No lectures tomorrow. I missed one on Thursday, mainly because I woke up with bright orange hair and face paint on my face still. However being David Bowie is fun. As is being Anna Nicole Smith. I only ate out today. I'm terrible. I'm always going to waste my money on stuff. Ack. People on the internet make me angry. For I am Caroline, professional retard. I keep getting lots of junk mail. I have to make decisions about New York. I should be working at my degree but keep putting it off. Someone told me the other day that a cretin/kretin meant you were a christian. But they lied. Wikipedia says so. Oh and at the time there were some pf those 'crazy christians' in the room and I said 'Fuck I don't want anyone to think I'm a christian. Ewww. As if.'

I'm stealth. I'm also an atheist who was singing Christmas carols as part of her degree today. That should piss off anyone who is easily offended. Remember offence is deffo a choice. I'm like two people jumping from the twin towers on 9/11 and fucking on the way down. Guten Nacht.
